Code Orange Kids

Code Orange Kids is a hardcore-driven four piece from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the past year they've released a demo, tape and just put out their first 7", titled Cycles. They've also recently been signed to Mayfly Records. Code Orange Kids play some of the nastiest, angriest music I've had the pleasure of listening to and put on a great show. They also manage to be extremely nice people. Any fan of heavy music should have no trouble falling in love with this band.

Orchid

Orchid was a screamo band from Amherst, Massachusetts and is considered one of the pioneers of the genre. They were one of the first "emoviolence" bands, incorporating elements of powerviolence and grindcore into their sound, changing the way that people viewed and enjoyed intense music. Their lyrics dealt with highly personal topics, as well as references to philosophers (such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor Adorno) and elements of European culture. They released three full lengths, as well as several EPs and splits. Their first release and full length, Chaos Is Me, is held as a quintessential record in the genre and a must for any fan of screamo. The band split in 2002, and released a posthumous compilation of hard-to-find tracks in 2005, titled Totality. The members have gone on to form bands like Panthers, Ampere, Wolves and Transistor Transistor. Their vocalist, Will Killingsworth, currently runs Clean Plate Records.

Pianos Become The Teeth

Pianos Become The Teeth formed in 2006 out of Baltimore, Maryland. They play a beautiful and intense mixture of screamo, hardcore and post-rock. They are by far one of the biggest names in modern day screamo, and this isn't without good reason. Their first release -- Saltwater EP -- came out in 2008. They released a split with Ezra Joyce in 2009, and then would then put out their first full length -- Old Pride -- later that year. Old Pride was originally released through Blackjaw Records and then reissued through Top Shelf Records. The reissue met much critical acclaim, being deemed not just great for the time it was released, but rather a masterpiece in the genre as a whole. The band has just finished recording their follow-up to the album, The Lack Long After; set to be released on November 1st of this year. The hype around this band is nothing but extremely well deserved. This is a band that holds nothing back, every song is filled with a type of passion that you just don't see very often in music these days. Do not hesitate to check them out.

Sailboats

 

Sailboats was a screamo band from Berkeley, California. They recorded a two song demo in 2003 and played a few shows in California, before shortly coming to an unfortunate end. Some of the members went on to join a band called Loma Prieta (which I'll definitely be posting about as well). Sailboats apparently recorded a full LP, which has never been officially released or heard by anyone outside of the band. The demo has been widely circulated throughout the internet, often seen with two short additional tracks. These third and fourth tracks have been confirmed to not actually be by Sailboats. As short lived as they were, Sailboats wrote one of my all-time favorite screamo songs and it's a shame that they didn't continue writing. I highly recommend them to anyone curious about the genre.
